Pr Dominique Paepe

Dominique Paepe graduated in 2003 as veterinarian at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Ghent University. After performing a rotating internship followed by a residency internal medicine at the Small Animal Department of Ghent University, she became Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine – Companion Animals (subspecialty Internal Medicine) in 2009. Between 2009 and 2015 she combined clinical work with scientific research and successfully obtained the degree of PhD in Veterinary Sciences in April 2014. Her dissertation was entitled “Screening for early feline chronic kidney disease. Limitations of currently available tests and possible solutions.” After a brief intermezzo of clinical work in private practice, she was appointed as fulltime Professor in internal medicine of companion animals at Ghent University since October 2015. This position mainly involves education tasks, but also includes research and clinical activities.

Dominique Paepe is (co-)author of over 70 scientific publications, is a frequent speaker at national and international meetings and is a regular reviewer for international scientific journals. For her research activities, she has been mainly active within the field of veterinary nephrology, more specifically the early diagnosis of feline kidney disease (e.g. screening, indirect markers for glomerular filtration rate Cystatin C and Symmetric Dimethylarginine, kidney ultrasonography, limited sampling strategies to estimate glomerular filtration rate). Another research focus has been health screening of senior and geriatric dogs and cats. For her research activities within the field of veterinary uronephrology, she was awarded with the 2015 IRIS Award.
